In this high-tech world, there is a new trend emerging in Lower Hutt. People from all walks of life are rediscovering a simpler time and simple pleasures like freshly baked bread, homemade preserves and freshly grown vegetables. As well as saving money, they are reducing their impact on the planet too.
Transition towns are running “Bottling, Bread and Beer”, a series of 5 food skills workshops at the Horticultural Hall and Reka to make your dollar go further. The workshops will teach you “the basic skills of bottling and pickling, making jam, freezing and drying, making your own bread, and brewing beer.” Email transitionskills@gmail.com for more information or to register.
Hutt City Council are promoting 8 workshops at Weltec with practical skills on gardening, electricity savings, new shopping and travel choices, warmer houses and reducing waste. I am sure the topic of how to “green” your budget and have more money will be popular. Contact Nicolette West on nicolette.west@huttcity.govt.nz for more information.
To celebrate “New Zealand’s ReSaucefulness”, a group of “Nanas” have set up Nanatech www.nanatech.wordpress.com and http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=371141018085&ref=ts. They swap recipes, patterns, and have just started meetings to stitch n’ b!tch in Wellington, “as a way for crafters (not just knitters!) to get together and have a yarn”. Maybe a group could be encouraged in Lower Hutt too.
