CVL study waste of money

Why is the Mayor suggesting we waste $50,000 of ratepayers money on consultants to “investigate” the Cross Valley Link (CVL)?
According to the Hutt News, Hutt City Mayor David Ogden wants the government to fund the CVL, and the city council has put aside $50,000 for consultants. I don’t know what I feel about the CVL. But regardless of the benefits or costs of this new road, this study is a waste of money. The government has made it quite clear that it will not fund the CVL so why are the council wasting money on consultants at this time.

Good question: Why are they proposing to waste $50,000 on consultants?

Thanks for highlighting this issue, Lisa. The route of the proposed Cross Valley Link road just about runs through my back garden.
But it’s been a shadow hanging over Lower Hutt residents throughout the city for a long time. The massive cost to ratepayers, the robbing of sustainable modes of transport to fund it, the environmental damage to our river by building another crossing, and the simple waste of huge new roading projects in an age of dwindling cheap oil supplies – this affects everyone.
In 2007, VAN – Valley Action Network were the only group involved in the Hutt City Council elections talking about this. We launched a petition and collected signatures of people who’s homes would be affected:

The petition was very popular:

We’re standing for Council again this year. It’s great that we’re not alone in speaking up this time. Full support to you!
